A Day at the Fortress of Louisbourg

Today it is pouring 'cats & dogs' here in the Cape Breton town of Louisbourg. Yesterday was a beautiful day when we spent 5 hours at the Fortress of Louisbourg.

As you may know, this is a National Historic Site Of Canada.
It is the largest reconstructed 18th century town in North America.
We hadn't realized that the French came here and established this fortess in 1713.

Based on a thriving fishing industry and trade, Louisbourg quickly became France's most important stronghold and seaport in New France.

The sights and sounds of the 18th century certainly were alive here.
Needless-to-say, we had a fabulous time roaming about.

Costumed staff were present throughout the fortess.
They provided us with wonderful information.

We ate a delicious lunch based on 18th century tradition and recipes.
